News Media Canada is pleased to announce that Robert Williams of the Telegraph-Journal, Saint John, NB, and Victoria Gibson of The Globe and Mail and Toronto Star have been named the winners of the 28th annual Hon. Edward Goff Penny Memorial Prizes for Young Canadian Journalists for their work published in 2018.

Robert Williams, Provincial Reporter, Telegraph-Journal, Saint John, NB

Robert Williams is a provincial reporter with the Telegraph-Journal. Before joining the Saint John office in 2017, Robert worked in the legislative bureau for Brunswick News Inc. where he covered provincial and federal politics for the chain. He worked as an intern at The Daily Gleaner in Fredericton and at iPolitics in Ottawa after graduating from the journalism program at Carleton University, and was one of 10 journalists selected in 2016 for the Canadian military journalism course with the Canadian Global Affairs Institute, in partnership with the Centre for Military, Security and Strategic Studies at the University of Calgary.

Victoria Gibson, Reporter, Toronto Star and The Globe and Mail

Victoria Gibson is a Toronto-based freelance reporter. She joined the Toronto Star in June 2017 as a breaking news reporter—in lieu of attending her graduation that day from Queen’s University. She moved to The Globe and Mail the following May, beginning in the paper’s Report on Business and later transitioning onto the national news team. Through her roles at the Globe and the Star, Victoria has reported on events from the Bruce McArthur serial killer case to the Toronto van attack, as well as penning numerous long features and an investigative series with a colleague into abusive behaviour by Ontario teachers. Prior to completing her undergraduate, Victoria also worked as a multimedia reporter for the Kingston Whig-Standard and as news editor of The Queen’s Journal. Her reporting has previously been nominated for an Ontario Newspaper Award and, as part of a newsroom team, a National Newspaper Award and Online Journalism Award.
