The Canadian Community Newspaper Awards honour outstanding work in editorial, photography, multimedia and overall excellence in community newspaper publishing across the country. Congratulations to the 2023 CCNAwards winners for Best News Story (circulation up to 9,999), selected from 41 entries.

Entries in this category consisted of one story published in one issue dealing with a local event of some newsworthy importance. Entries were judged on quality of writing, depth and detail and newsworthiness. Click the image below to read the winning news stories.

“A close race among the top-four news stories, but the ‘fed up with frog jumping’ story stood out amongst the submissions in this category. A unique news story for sure, and the reporter spent time researching this annual event using trapped frogs. Likewise, freeing up tangled humpbacks was impactful. Always great to read a feel-good story when it comes to our whale populations on both coasts. Third-place also nicely done as a reporter was able to get an OPP officer to open up about tragedy in his own life which helped shape how he polices, evident from the feedback from individuals how have interacted with him on the job. An array of great news stories I was able to peruse, but the top-three stood out because of the subject matter or saving whales.”

1st Place: The Carillon (Steinbach, MB) Fed up with frog jumping”, Nicole Buffie

“Wonderful story by the reporter looking at the issue of ending the trapping of frogs to be used in this annual event. Kudos to the reporter for hopping to get the story … had to find a pun.”

2nd Place: Powell River Peak (Powell River, BC) “Combined effort frees tangled humpback”, Paul Galinski

“Kudos to those involved in saving humpback whales from fishing nets. Reporter did a wonderful job telling this story.”

3rd Place: The Highlander (Haliburton, ON) ‘Devastating’ call inspired better policing”, Lisa Gervais

“Impactful story with the reporter getting the OPP officer to open up on a tough subject prior to him becoming a police officer, and how he handles the job going forward based on the feedback he’s received from individuals who he has helped as a policeman.”

The 2023 CCNAwards recognize the outstanding work produced in 2022 and celebrate the vibrancy of community newspapers across Canada. Award winners were announced on September 15, 2023. For a full list of winners visit www.ccnawards.ca.

For this year’s National Newspaper Week, the Claresholm Local Press ran a double-page spread to celebrate the importance local journalism plays in keeping their communities informed and engaged.

In addition to running the national print ad, they highlighted their regional and national awards, included a staff photo and celebrated their home delivery carrier, Sonny! They even hosted a community open house with hot dogs and chips.

Read their message to readers below and check out their photos in the feature pages below.

Look to us first!

We want to renew our commitment to bringing you local stories that matter. In return we ask you to “Look to us first” when sourcing and sharing your news.  So just what does that mean?

From the home games of our sports teams, community events and activities, to the municipal government meetings – we are there to report the stories that matter.

Look to us to bring you the FACTS; when you have a story to share; when you have an event you want to promote; and when you have an opinion you want to share. We are here for you! We are invested in our community.

As a newspaper, we have a long history in our community. A tradition that dates back to 1926. Community newspapers are alive and well. In fact, our newspaper reaches more people in the trading area than any other news outlet. And we are survivors. We’ve survived the World Wars, the Depression, recessions; and the Pandemic.

We invest in our community by telling the stories of the people who live and work here. The hard work of our staff every week is the reason people continue to turn to us for their news and advertising.

The Claresholm Local Press is supported by advertising. When a business or individual buys an advertisement in the newspaper, it subsidizes space for a story you enjoy reading. Without advertising there would be no newspaper. The subscription and cover price offsets the cost of distributing the paper, but doesn’t begin to cover the cost of maintaining a building or paying the wages of 6 full and part-time staff members, who help to bring you the news. So, if you enjoy reading about our community, it’s important to support our advertisers, and your newspaper.

We also need the help of our readers to produce our weekly paper. We ask: do you know of an inspiring story that needs to be told? Let us know. We can’t share a story if we don’t know about it!

We love having feedback from our readers. If we have included something you like, or dislike, let us know! Again, I ask you to: Look to us first. I am incredibly proud of the product we produce each week, and I hope as a reader, you are too. Our newspaper preserves the history of our community, a job we take very seriously. We strive to put out a newspaper you find equally interesting and informative, because we are your newspaper, and we’re here for you.

Sincerely, Amanda Zimmer, Owner/Publisher, Claresholm Local Press

Leger has released some interesting results coming from its latest survey that asked Canadians about their perceptions of Bill C-18 and its implications on their news consumption habits.

Overall, the findings show that awareness of Bill C-18 is high among Canadians, with about three-quarters of Canadians being aware of the legislation. Also, nearly half of Canadians (47%) have seen changes in their online feed since Meta blocked news content. This proportion is higher among respondents who mainly get their news via social media (59%) and Quebecers (54%).

Another finding was that two-thirds of Canadians believe that news should be free and accessible to anyone. Those who mainly get their news via social media are more likely (75%) to think that news should be free and accessible to anyone.

Some other interesting conclusions:

  • 43% of Canadians support Bill C-18, while 31% are opposed, and 26% don’t know enough about the situation to have an opinion.
  • 59% believe that Meta should lift its current ban on Canadian news on its platforms.
  • Since news is blocked on Meta platforms, 22% turn more to radio and television, and 20% to free media websites and applications to access news content. Only 6% of Canadians would pay for a subscription to access news directly.

You can download a full copy of the report here.

Just as tech companies have pushed back on Canadian news outlets since Ottawa passed the Online News Act, there is a new player in the space who could alter the so-called ‘status quo’.

Enter Noam Bardin, the founder of Post News.

Bardin, a former VP at Google, penned an op-ed that was published earlier this week in The National Post that explained his company’s vision.

“We believe people want to consume news in social media feeds, and that publishers and content creators should be fairly compensated. We are committed to helping Canadian news publishers and broadcasters continue to reach their audiences — and be compensated fairly for their work,” he writes.

The federal government released the draft regulations for the Online News Act late last week. The regulations will be open for a 30-day public consultation period.

The draft regulations provide some additional clarity on how the Online News Act, which received Royal Assent earlier this summer, will work to level the playing field between news publishers and tech platforms.

Based on available data, the Online News Act could result in Google having to pay news publishers $172 million per year. Facebook’s parent company Meta would be responsible for about $62 million to comply with the terms of the legislation.

The regulations also describe minimum thresholds tech platforms must achieve in order to receive any exemptions.

A new survey by Dentsu Media found that almost two-thirds of Canadians (64 per cent) are aware of Bill C-18, the Online News Act. More than half (58 per cent) said they are at least somewhat concerned about missing local news.

Ken Waddell, the publisher of the Manitoba-based Neepawa Banner & Press recently published a column that expands on Toronto Star publisher and owner Jordan Bitove’s recent speech at the Canadian Club. Waddell expands on many of the themes referenced by Bitove in his remarks and emphasizes the critical importance of local journalism. The link to the article is here. We’ve included a full-text version below: The Toronto Star publisher and owner Jordan Bitove made an impassioned plea recently to Canadian corporations and governments to step up and support journalism. Bitove argued that journalism is essential to democracy and that smaller communities are being starved of essential information. Bitove, speaking to a packed audience of business and community leaders at a Canadian Club luncheon in Toronto, said big tech companies including Google and Meta have drained crucial advertising revenue from media companies, endangering journalism’s business model and indirectly, democracy itself. “The advertising revenue that once funded our newsrooms has been moved, ironically, to companies that use our content for their benefit. The result is that we are seeing local news disappear by increments,” said Bitove, who estimated that tech giants control up to 80 per cent of the online advertising market. Lower revenue means less money for newsrooms to spend on the editors and reporters who keep Canadians well-informed, he said. “The result is we are seeing local news disappear at an alarming rate.” “Fact-checked, investigated, accountable truths — the stories that inform civil discourse, how we vote, what is happening in schools, hospitals, in the offices of influence, and on our streets — this comes from journalists — real people putting in a ton of effort to keep citizens informed,” said Bitove. “Without trusted, accountable journalism how are we going to counter the misinformation and disinformation that has come to dominate discussion and impact on our safety and public discourse?” Bitove cited statistics from the News Poverty Map showing that 361 news outlets have closed across Canada since 2008. He also noted the Canadian Media Directors’ Council says that over 3,000 editorial and noneditorial news jobs have been lost since 2020. That closure scenario has played out in Manitoba in the community newspaper industry. In the past few years, newspapers have shut down in Melita, Reston, Deloraine, Souris, Brandon, Carberry, Altona, Morden-Winkler, Carman, Stonewall, Selkirk and Gimli-Arborg. Bitove also pointed out that the tech giants are “manipulating” their algorithms so fewer readers see vital news stories. Just about every social media site user has voiced complaints about feeds being manipulated. Everyone knows that if you do a search on a particular product, you will be flooded with ads for that or similar products. The internet is both tracking us and controlling what we see. News Media Canada (NMC)said it wants to see increased ad spending from the government. NMC CEO Paul Deegan said, “The federal government needs to put its advertising dollars where its mouth is. It is unacceptable that they spent just $6 million on print ads out of an advertising budget of $140 million.” The situation that Deegan is speaking of is especially annoying in that Canadian dollars, be they spent by governments or corporations spent on internet advertising, goes to the U.S, never to be seen again in Canadians’ bank accounts. Changes are coming in the journalism field. Newspapers are gaining strength, especially locally owned newspapers. Advertisers and readers alike are realizing that reliable and relevant information is more dependable, the closer you are to the sources. In contrast, news and ads on the internet and even on television can be as phoney as a three dollar bill. It has been said that there are three things you need in real estate; location, location, location. In journalism it’s local, local, local! It’s nice to see the trend in journalism is trying to head back to local but it won’t last without advertising dollars.
