]]> In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly declared May 3 World Press Freedom Day, on the recommendation of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) General Conference.

May 3 carries a special significance, as it also the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek, a statement of free press principles created by newspaper journalists in Africa during a UNESCO seminar in Windhoek, Namibia in 1991. The Declaration calls for free, independent, pluralistic media worldwide, and characterizes free press as essential to democracy and a fundamental human right.

The Canadian Committee for World Press Freedom holds its annual World Press Freedom Day Luncheon on or around May 3. See separate event listing for details, or click here to visit the CCWPF website.

Every year on January 27, ABC Life Literacy Canada hosts Family Literacy Day, the largest national family literacy event in Canada. Literacy organizations, schools, libraries and media groups will coordinate numerous literacy-themed events and activities across the country in honour of this special initiative.

Family Literacy Day® is a national awareness initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999 to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family. News Media Canada is a proud supporter of Family Literacy Day, distributing public service announcements and editorial resources from ABC Life Literacy Canada to our members.
